About Blackie Pagano
ABOUT
Blackie Pagano
I have specialized in the repair and restoration of tube amplifiers and audio equipment since 1989.
My work is informed by experience as a touring guitarist and bassist, sound engineer, and recording studio technician in New York City. Equipment is evaluated not only electronically, but in terms of how it must perform on stage, in the studio, and in critical listening environments.
After years working in New York, I relocated my workshop to Los Angeles, where I continue to serve musicians, audiophiles, and recording studios.
Service Approach
I approach the bench with distinct priorities depending on the equipment in front of me.
Vintage Musical Instrument Amplifiers
Faithful Restoration
Vintage amplifiers were voiced for specific musical purposes. Service focuses on restoring original performance and preserving the character intended by the designers.
• Design Intent — circuits are returned to proper operating condition while respecting original engineering decisions
• Material Integrity — components are selected to maintain authentic response and reliability
• Modifications — circuit alterations are performed only at the owner’s request
• Performance Voicing — when requested, adjustments may be made to optimize response characteristics such as headroom, brightness, compression, and dynamic feel while preserving circuit integrity
Hi-Fi Audio Equipment
Performance Optimization
Hi-fi service focuses on restoring performance while addressing component limitations that affect clarity, noise floor, and long-term stability.
• Performance Restoration — circuits are returned to proper operating condition and specification
• Component Upgrades — modern, high-quality components may be used where they improve reliability and measurable performance
• System Voicing — when requested, component choices may be tailored to support listening priorities, from neutral accuracy to enhanced warmth and depth
Clients & Community
Over the course of my practice, I have serviced equipment for touring professionals, recording artists, studios, private collectors, working musicians, and local audiophiles.
Some projects have involved historically significant instruments and equipment associated with internationally recognized artists and recordings.
Selected credits are available here.
While notable projects occur, the majority of my work supports musicians and listeners who depend on reliable, great-sounding equipment every day.
